    Activated carbon - Wikipedia

Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal, is a form of carbon commonly used to filter contaminants from water and air, among many other uses. It is processed (activated) to have small, low-volume pores that increase the surface area available for adsorption (n.b., adsorption is not the same as absorption) or chemical reactions.

    Activation temperatures typically range from 700 to 1.100° C. In the resulting water-gas reaction C + H 2 O CO + H 2 C + 2 H 2 O CO 2 + 2 H 2 the carbon is partially gasified, and a porous, highly activated carbon skeleton is produced. In the chemical activationprocess, nonincinerated carbonaceous

The chemically activated carbon, Norit C, shows higher specific heat capacity up to ˜100 °C, probably attributed to the nature of the phosphoric acid treatment that promotes an acidic character of the AC [45,46], as opposed to the basic character associated to CO 2 activation [29,47].

Heat of adsorption within the activated carbon bed has a negative effect on the GWC. The heat build within the carbon bed increases as the mass of fuel vapors sent to the canister in a given time increase. This has a significant impact on canisters designed to meet the ORVR regulation. Fig. 15 shows the GWC as a function of loading rate. The data shows a 35% reduction in GWC when going from a loading rate of 1 g/min to the ORVR rate of 50 g/min.

Activated carbon is widely used to adsorb vapors to prevent their release to the air. For certain classes of chemicals, reaction or adsorption on the carbon surface is accompanied by release of a large amount of heat that may cause hot spots in the carbon bed.
